Besides a clever, laugh out loud title, ‘Fifty Shades of Grayson’ brings us some humour to break up the torture, death threats and broken hearts a-plenty.
Let’s bitch it out…
Welcome to the broken hearts club. Whether it is friends, lovers or family doesn’t matter because hearts are breaking all over Mystic Falls. From Damon (Ian Somerhalder) deciding he doesn’t deserve to be in love with Elena (Nina Dobrev), to Katherine (Nina Dobrev) wanting to fight to win Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) forgiveness, or Aaron (Shaun Sipos) leaving behind the only family he has left, to poor Enzo (Michael Malarkey) finally coming face to face to his only friend – the same one who left him for dead fifty years ago. Not to mention Katherine’s annoying daughter Nadia (Olga Fonda) who gets pissed when her absentee mother doesn’t want to live in someone else’s body. I don’t know about you, but I feel like a real downer after that episode!
Let’s start with my favourite new addition to the show. I have so many question about the randomness that just occurred with Enzo! The most important of which is : where is he going now? He has nowhere to go, and knows no one. He has a crazy mad scientist Dr. Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) that’s going to be hot on his trail as soon as the doc regains his composure from his plans gone wrong. Enzo has no one and nowhere to go. And this doesn’t even seem to phase Damon. He reunites with the guy and then just lets him walk off in to the sunset? No way. Damon doesn’t have very many friends, and he just destroyed his relationship with Elena, so he’s going to need Enzo. I think with a little love and affection, Enzo will come around. Plus, there’s about a dozen bedrooms in the Salvatore house, can’t they offer up just one? I think its the least Damon could do. (Is it really obvious that I’m pushing for this guy to be a series regular?)
Oh Katherine. My new favourite character! Back in season one, I never thought I would say that. I don’t remember her being nearly as funny as she has become this season, and I’ve come to look forward to her scenes. In such a depressing and dark show, she brings a little lightness and humour that is much needed. I always thought that it was Nina Dobrev the actress that I didn’t like, but I’ve recently determined that it’s just Elena that I can’t stand. Dobrev plays Katherine’s sarcasm to perfection and has really changed my opinion of her as a actress. Now that is saying something! Which is why I’m scared that my favourite character is going to be leaving the show. I keep thinking there will be a way out of this aging and subsequent death thing she’s got going on, but I’m not so sure. The only option that has been given to her/us so far is from her annoying daughter Nadia: to become a traveller and live in someone else’s body. I can’t even express to you how much I hate this idea. I thought it was dumb when Nadia’s boyfriend moved in on Matt’s (Zach Roerig) body earlier this season, and I think its even dumber now.
So much of what makes Katherine is her face and her body that we’ve come to associate with the dopplegangers. To lose that would just mean she isn’t Katherine anymore. Plus, I have zero faith that any other actor/actress could play Katherine’s nuances to perfection like Dobrev does. Dobrev is Katherine, in my humble opinion, and I have a huge problem with the idea of anyone else trying to imitate that. Pay attention writers- this reviewer will be supremely pissed if you try to pull something like that. Just dream up some random potion or lotion or spell that will fix her and save all of us some grief, will you please?

Other observations:
- Another week without my man Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). I get it that Bonnie (Kat Graham) is back from the dead and he wants to have some alone time for some lovin’, but they’re trying to sell me on the fact that Jeremy wouldn’t be around to help if his sister was kidnapped and missing? I’m not buying it. So just toss him a few lines and give him a bit of face time. It’ll make the story more believable and satisfy those of us who have a love on for him.
- Since when is Matt a trainer? And Katherine is paying him now? That is just too weird to try to explain.
- I’m keeping the faith that Stefan will forgive Katherine. And that Katherine will live obviously. I would hate to see Stefan go running back to Elena now that Damon has ditched her and here’s why – she chose Damon! Then she flaunted her love affair in Stefan’s face, and also didn’t look for him when he was drowning in a quarry for three months. Then she wasn’t there for him during his PTSD episode. There are a million ways that she isn’t good enough for him but he still has a soft spot for her. I hope he remembers all those bad things when he realizes she’s sad and alone again.
All in all, not bad for a fall finale! What did you think of the Katherine cliffhanger? Are you holding on to hope with me that she will get out of this somehow? What do you think of the traveller idea? Do you think Damon will regret breaking up with Elena once the hurt wears off? Sound off below!
The Vampire Diaries will return on Thursday, January 23rd at 8pm EST on the CW.
