After five seasons, tonight we say goodbye to a fan favourite character who will be missed. But was the goodbye episode worthy of our Katherine Pierce?

Let’s bitch it out…

Well, I guess that’s it. After five seasons of mayhem and murder, we’ve finally said goodbye to Katherine PIerce (Nina Dobrev). I, for one, am sad to see her go. Despite these past few episodes where she was pretending to be Elena (Nina Dobrev) and trying too hard, Katherine is a staple of the show. She can always be counted on for witty and sarcastic comments that bring a lighthearted feeling to an otherwise dark show.

(Just for the record, I’m talking like this is the end, but I will never put anything past the writers of this show, so I will officially not be surprised if there’s some kind of mystical or supernatural magic that brings her back somewhere down the road. Just for the record)

Katherine is back to her old self tonight and puts an end to the pretending, but we get to see a new side to her – one that actually cares about her daughter, Nadia (Olga Fonda) and who cares about giving that daughter some peace before she passes. Yawn. This is not the Katherine Pierce we know and love and frankly it feels a little false. But after Nadia’s death, Katherine is back in all her glory, with some amazing goodbyes to our band of misfits, taking credit for everything they have become. And seriously, as if it wasn’t obvious that Stefan (Paul Wesley) would be the one to stab her. In fact, I thought it was so obvious, I kept waiting for the surprise that would shock me instead, as is usual on this show.

But nope, the writers go for nostalgia and emotion for Katherine’s death, and leave us with a tacky shot of Katherine dying next to her daughter’s dead body. Give me a break. The death that Katherine truly deserves is the one she gets instead of passing to the afterlife. That moment when she lays her hands on Bonnie (Kat Graham) and they can’t figure out why its not working? Genius. I love it. And Katherine’s ultimate scene? Exactly what would be expected for her. While she was yammering on to Bonnie, I was thinking how this is too easy for Katherine. She deserves a bigger goodbye than just getting her final twist of the knife in to Elena, so to speak, and I’m happy the writers try to stay true to what Katherine deserves. Katherine flying out the door of the church? Perfect.

Speaking of Elena, I might need the “Dr. Maxfield’s Serums for Dummies” on this one. Ok, so Dr. Wes (Rick Cosnett) wasn’t trying to help cure Nadia like they thought? And instead, he used the werewolf venom to make a serum that…. what? This is where I get a little confused. Is it a serum that will make her a hybrid? Because that right there would be a reason for our dear friend Tyler (Michael Trevino) to stay on the show. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is right – he has no purpose right now. So having Elena turn in to a hybrid would result in him coaching her on the ways of the hybrid and give him a reason to stay in Mystic Falls. Plus it would bring a whole new dynamic to her relationship with everyone. But then again, someone could school me below in the comments and I could be completely off base with what happened! All I got is that Katherine stuck herself with one of Dr. Wes’ serums to leave a little token for Elena, and those serums are never good for anyone.

Other Observations:

• Way to go Caroline (Candice Accola)! You tell Tyler exactly where to go. She’s right – she’s not perfect and she’s allowed a few mistakes along the way, so why is everyone holding her to a higher standard? Damon goes off the reservation and becomes a ripper, so does Stefan on a semi regular basis.. Sure even Matt (Zach Roerig) developed feelings for the awful Nadia who was compelling him. Caroline is right that Tyler needs to get over it or get away. Besides, her sex scene with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was hot as heck and no one should be making her feel bad about that. (Klaroline forever!)
• Please. We all know how I feel about those flashbacks. But flashbacks about a character I could care less about? Waste of my time. All we see is that she sauntered around the world for centuries, asking random people about Katherine. We already knew that’s how she spent her life; we didn’t need corny flashbacks for that.
•  Good riddance Nadia. You looked lovely in your final scene passing on to the other side.
